Pro’s and Con’s of domain options

Option 1:  KSC Open

Pro’s: it’s based on wordpress.org (not .com) and is much more powerful and flexible. You will have a better functioning site, and will learn more web site building skills which is a great thing for your resume or CV.  And you won’t get ads on your site! We provide this domain site to you for free until graduation. You will have access to a c-panel where you can create multiple sites or subdomains.

Con’s:  After graduation, if you want to keep your site(s), you will need to migrate your domain and pay $30/year to keep it (including all subdomain sites).  But it’s very easy, and not that expensive. If $30 is a hindrance, let me know and I’ll find a way to pay for it for your first year after graduating.

Option 2:  Wordpress.com:

Pro’s:  it’s still very good with a lot of tools and choices, easy to set up, and you don’t have to pay anything after graduation if you can live with commercial ads on your site, and you don’t have to remember to register it every year.

Just go to WordPress.com and click the ‘start your website’ button and follow the instructions to create an account for free. Be sure to skip all of the options to pay for things. If you want, you can later migrate it to reclaim hosting (the same web service we use for KSC open).

Con’s:  you will get many annoying ads on your site unless you pay (for each site), it is much less flexible, there is less in the way of web building tools and options, more restricted in what you can do.
